Memorial service to honor Donald L. "Don" Stokes, PSP
Sun Aug 13th 2:00pm - 4:00pm Sistersville Lodge #333 333 Charles St, Sistersville, WV 26175, USA map John Louis “Jack” Dematte, 84, of Wheeling, WV, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 27, 2023, at Liza’s Place. Jack was born in Wheeling on June 11, 1938, to Louis and Selma (Rentschler) Dematte. He grew up in North Wheeling and graduated from Wheeling Central Catholic High School. He attended Wheeling College, where he was a starter on the 1956 Pioneer Basketball Team. Upon graduation, Jack married his high school sweetheart, Delores “Dee” Ruggaber. He enlisted in the US Army, and relocated to Fort Knox, Kentucky where he and Dee started their family. They returned to Wheeling where Jack worked for Olin Corporation and Blaw-Knox Company before his employment with Charles M. Sledd Company, where he retired. Jack never met a stranger and went out of his way to find a connection to those he met through a common person or place. He loved Wheeling, its people, and its rich history, and often shared stories of his fondest memories with others. Jack cherished his family and many friends. He and Dee’s home was a warm and welcoming gathering place for friends, family, and loved ones to celebrate countless holidays and special occasions. Jack also enjoyed vacations at the beach in North Carolina, fishing in Canada, and being a lifelong member of the WV Snake Club. He was an avid Notre Dame fan and he and Dee enjoyed traveling to South Bend for football games. Jack was a member of the Wheeling Elks Lodge and Wheeling Eagles.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Delores “Dee” (Ruggaber) Dematte; three children, John “Buddy” Louis Dematte, Jr. of Nashville, TN; Darlene Dematte Reiter of Nashville, TN; and Cecilia “CeCe” (Steve) Brehl of Carmel, IN; six grandchildren, Jack, Alex, CeCe, Lexi, Evan and Luke; his sister, Darlene “Cookie” (Bruce) Argall of Greensburg, PA; and three nephews, Douglas, Joel, and Christopher. Jack attended Sacred Heart Church before he and Dee moved to St. Michael’s Church while raising their children. They eventually found their way back to the Cathedral of St. Joseph where they were married. Family and friends will be received on Sunday, May 21st from 4-8 pm at Altmeyer Funeral Homes, 1400 Eoff Street with a starting at 7:30 pm. Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, May 22, at 10 am at the Cathedral of St. Joseph. Interment will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The family would like to thank Jeanne and Ken Weisenborn and family for their tireless support over countless years as well as Jeff Andreas for his many selfless acts of kindness. The family would also like to thank the staff at Liza’s Place for making the final journey home a peaceful one. In addition, they would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Wheeling Continuous Care Center. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Liza’s Place or to the charity of your choice. Otis G. Cox Jr., 81, of Morgantown, passed away Wednesday afternoon, May 10, 2023, at Sundale Nursing Home in Morgantown. A complete obituary will be announced in the coming days. Friends may join the family to honor Otis’ life and legacy at Smith Funeral & Cremation Care, 108 Holland Ave., Westover/Morgantown, on Sunday, May 21, from noon until the time of the funeral service at 2 p.m. Otis will then be cremated following the funeral service at his request. On Saturday May 13, the Postal Service teamed up with local food pantries for their annual food drive. Several Lodge Members from the Harrison County Lodge 2875 volunteered to go out and follow mailmen on their routes to pick up donated food items, return them to the Eastpointe Postal docks for weighing, separating the food items and placing in pantry bins. Members also worked on dock doing separation, loading and unloading trucks. Lodge members also worked with the Mustard Seed in Clarksburg putting food items away. Members who volunteered were ER, Mike Jacobs, Nancy Jacobs, Esteemed Loyal Knight, Kevin Reeves, Lodge Chaplain, Tami Reeves. [email protected] With great sadness, we share the loss of Donald Lester Stokes, 86, of Paden City, WV, who died in Parkersburg, WV, on May 1, 2023, with his sons at his side. Don was born December 3, 1936, in Sistersville, WV, to Celia Ann Stokes and Lester Franklin Stokes. He was Presbyterian. Don was a life member at Sistersville ELKS Lodge #333 and Sistersville VFW Post #6327. At the Elks, he dedicated his time to charitable service. He held every lodge chair and was Exalted Ruler in 1966. He was elected West Virginia Elks State President in 1973, and was a Grand Lodge ritualistic committeeman in the mid 1990's. He remained involved as Sistersville Elks Secretary until the end. His last duty was making sure three donations would be processed. He built many lasting friendships through Elks service. To rekindle our youth’s regard for patriotism, the Grand Lodge Fraternal Committee is pleased to offer the Americanism Essay Contest to fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students. The 2023-24 theme is “What the Bill of Rights Means to Me.” It is aimed at providing our youth with an appreciation of the first ten amendments to the United States Constitution and their importance to every citizen. The deadline for submitting entries to your Local Lodges is December 15, 2023. All essays must go through the judging process through your Local Lodge first, then to your States District Lodge Activities Chairman, then on to your State Chair. This is the perfect time to communicate with your local schools to place the contest in their curriculum and provide them with pertinent information about the contest. Grand Lodge will award $1,000 to the first-place winners in each age division, $500 to second place, and $250 to third place. He was born April 2, 1925 in Triadelphia, WV son of the late John and Mary Radovich Remick. Red was retired from Ohio Valley (United) Dairy, a founding member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, Life Member of the Elks Lodge No. 28 of Wheeling, Mt. Olivet Volunteer Fire Department, member and past president of the Mt. Olivet Community Park, with 35 years of service and a US Army WWII veteran. Survivors include three daughters: Becky (Bob) Randolph, Patti (Andy) Wesolowski and Denni Remick all of Wheeling; grandson: Robert “Bob” Randolph, Jr of Columbus, OH; two great-grandchildren: Ashley Randolph of Lewis Center, OH and Carl J. “C.J.” Randolph of Columbus, OH; two great great grandchildren: Carter Yant and Emma Young both of Lewis Center, OH and numerous nieces and nephews. George Vieweg Thieroff, Sr., 87, of Wheeling, passed away peacefully at home on July 29, 2022. Born in Wheeling, he was the only son of the late, George Edward Thieroff and Adelaide Vieweg Thieroff. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, David Andrew Thieroff in 1983; sisters Andria Thieroff, Ruth Foose (Harry), Adelaide Luchetti, Sally Holmes (Tiny) and brother-in-law, Robert Mendenhall. George is survived by his wife of 65 years, Darlene Klein Thieroff; son George V. Thieroff, Jr. (Lesa) of Wheeling; daughter, Karen Thieroff Sproul (Joseph) of Waverly, PA; grandchildren, George V. Thieroff, III, MD (fiance' Stefanie), David A. Thieroff, D.D.S., Joseph H. Sproul, IV (Jess), Sara Sproul deBlasi (Gerard), Rebecca Sproul Kertsmar (Joseph), 7 great-grandchildren, a sister, Sue Mendenhall, a brother-in-law, Robert Luchetti, Sr. and numerous loved nieces and nephews. George graduated from Linsly, Class of 1957. He was part owner and President of Tower Lines Trucking in Warwood from 1957 – 1985. Afterwards, owner of Carson Petroleum Co. and McDonald Ford. He was a real estate and licensed insurance broker for Fort Henry Realty, and owner of Muzak and Advanced Communications until he retired and sold it to his son. George was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church where he served on Vestry and Laurencefield Chapel, where he was treasurer. He was a life member of Wheeling Elks Club #28 and a past member of the Wheeling Country Club. George wanted to thank all of the good people he worked with as he felt any success he had was because of them. As per his request, there will be no visitation. August 10, 1934 -July 15, 2022 Clyde Richard Shook, 87, formerly of Wheeling, recently of Hilliard, OH, passed away on Friday, July 15, 2022. He was born August 10, 1934, in Marshall County, WV; son of the late Thomas and Dorothy (Miller) Shook. He was a life-time member of Elm Grove United Methodist Church, where he was a charter member of the Men's Association and was retired after 40 years with Wheeling Power (AEP). He was a32nd Degree Mason and Past Master with Wheeling Lodge #5 as well as the Scottish Rite. He was a member of the Eagles #344, life member of the B. P. O. Elks Lodge #28 of Wheeling, Wildlife League, Wheeling Civitan Club, Chamber of Commerce, Moundsville Country Club and a20 year member of the Wheeling Recreation Commission. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Jane (Marple) Shook; siblings Leota (Shook) Dawson McMahon, Grace Davis, Joan Danehart, Cathy Shook, Carolyn Shook, Lee Shook, Joseph Shook and Charles Shook.
